Description

Church Pension Group (CPG) is a financial services organization that serves the Episcopal Church, located in Midtown Manhattan. CPG was founded in 1917 to provide pension benefits to eligible clergy of the Episcopal Church. Since then, its mission has expanded to include life and disability insurance, health benefits, property & casualty insurance, and publishing.
We currently have a hybrid work model. #LI-Hybrid
The Accountant prepares transactional accounting for The Church Insurance Company of Vermont, The Church Insurance Company, The Church Insurance Agency Corporation and Church Insurance Service LLC property and casualty insurance group of companies (CIC). The role reports directly to the Manager Finance and supports Finance Analysts.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES include the following. Other duties may be assigned.
Prepares all general accounting activities for CIC to comply with its US GAAP and statutory financial accounting
Responsible for ensuring the timely, accurate completion of journal entries monthly and ensure that all entries have proper support
Prepares monthly reconciliations and identify, discrepancies and research resolutions timely
Responsible for preparation of the Annual and Quarterly statutory NAIC filings
Ensures the information on the balance sheet and income statement are presented accurately and timely
Evaluates and identify opportunities to improve the quality and level of work
Assists with internal and external audit requests
Contributes to developing, maintaining, and enhancing policies and procedures and control.
Collaborates with the VP Finance and Analysts to ensure issues identified during financial analysis are understood and corrected within future accounting, as necessary
Collaborates with Business Partner and Analysts to create a smooth and efficient end-to-end flow of information
Assists with the development of customer service levels
Ensures that troubleshooting of internal and external client service issues are addressed effectively and timely
QUALIFICATIONS To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. Thorough experience of statutory and general accepted accounting principles in the insurance industry
Experience in the preparation of statutory statements for insurance companies. (P&C; experience preferred)
Experience with Oracle Financials or similar software
Exceptional attention to details
Strong analytical, problem-solving, and critical thinking skills
Strong oral and written communication skills
Proficiency with Microsoft office application (Excel, Word, Outlook)
Ability to work independently, at times, but also with others in a team environment
EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE:
BA\B.S in Finance or Accounting.
Advance degree or CPA a plus
3+ years of finance-related experience. Prior experience with a financial, insurance or other related industry preferred.
