ABOUT THE DEPARTMENT
The Emeryville Child Development Center (ECDC) has been offering quality child care since 1979 for infants, toddlers, and preschoolers (ages four months to five years of age). We offer a play-based program. Age-appropriate activities are provided which encourage cognitive, motor, and language development across the six classrooms and emphasize positive self-image, cultural pride, and social and emotional development. The center also provides family support through parenting workshops, support groups, and partnerships with multiple services providers.
ABOUT THE POSITION
Under the supervision of a lead Teacher, the Teacher Assistant is a paraprofessional position that performs duties that are instructional in nature and serves in a position for which a teacher has ultimate responsibility for the design and delivery of educational programs or services to children in the Child Development Program.
THE IDEAL CANDIDATE IS:
EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE: Must possess or successfully complete a minimum of six (6) units in Early Childhood Education within one year of employment (3 units must be in infant/toddler development) from a recognized program. Failure to complete the units successfully by the end of the probationary period will result in release from probationary status. Must possess a high school diploma or GED certificate and experience working in the field of child development for infants, toddlers, pre- school children, or school-age children. All necessary and required documentation must be current as required by the Department of Education, Community Care Licensing, and the City of Emeryville.
Must be sufficiently physically active in order to monitor and participate in children games and exercise activities; stand, walk, squat, kneel, bend, twist, reach above shoulder level and below waist level, push and pull, lift up to 50 lbs. while monitoring children; sit on the floor while working with infants, toddlers, and children; carry and bottle feed infants/toddlers; grasp and manipulate items such as writing utensils; and sufficiently patient to care for children in distress and/or who are being uncooperative.
PROBATIONARY PERIOD/REPRESENTATION BENEFITS
The probationary period for new employees is twelve (12) months, which may be extended by an additional three (3) months. This position is represented by SEIU Local 1021.
THE SELECTION PROCESS
Stage I: Application and Supplemental Questionnaire, (Pass/Fail) – The first stage in the selection process will consist of an application and supplemental questionnaire appraisal review (pass/fail). Applications submitted without a completed supplemental questionnaire will not be given further consideration. Meeting the minimum qualifications does not guarantee advancement to the next stage. Only the most suitably qualified candidates will be invited to Stage II.
Stage II: Assessment Examination (Weighted 100%) – The second stage of the selection process may consist of a combination of job-related situational project exercises and an oral panel interview designed to assess technical knowledge and any additional KSAs. Job related situational project exercises may consist of written exercises, performance exercises or other situational exercises that would assess the KSAs. The Assessment Examination is designed to test the applicant's overall aptitude for the position.
Candidates must achieve a scale score of 70 or more on this examination to be placed on the hiring list for employment consideration. The City of Emeryville reserves the right to modify the selection process, as necessary, to conform to administrative or business necessity.
