ESSENTIAL DUTIES For Lateral and Entry Firefighter:
Performs firefighting activities including driving fire apparatus, operating pumps and related equipment, laying hose and performing fire combat, containment and extinguishment tasks. Also performs emergency aid activities for the ill and injured, including basic life support and providing other assistance as required.
Works under the general supervision of a Fire Department Officer.
Using excellent customer service skills, establishes and maintains effective working relationships with other employees, officials and all members of the general public.
Participates in fire drills, attends classes in firefighting, emergency medical, hazardous materials, technical rescue, wildland firefighting and related subjects.
Receives and relays fire calls and alarms. Operates personal computer, radio and other communication equipment.
Participates in the inspection of buildings, hydrants and other structures in fire prevention programs.
Maintains fire equipment, apparatus and facilities. Performs minor repairs to departmental equipment, apparatus and facilities.
Performs general maintenance work in the upkeep of fire facilities and equipment; cleans and washes walls and floors; cares for grounds around station; makes minor repairs; washes and dries hose; washes, cleans, polishes, maintains and tests apparatus and equipment.
Assists in developing plans for special assignments such as emergency preparedness, emergency communications, training programs, firefighting, hazardous materials, technical rescue, wildland firefighting and emergency aid activities.
Presents programs to the community on safety, medical and fire prevention topics.
Performs salvage operations such as throwing salvage covers, sweeping water and removing debris.
Perform shift work in a rotation of days, evenings and nights including weekends and holidays.
Operates a motor vehicle to assist in carrying out the business of the Department and the City.
Attendance at work is an essential function of this position.
Upon completion of probationary period, may assist in department supervisory and administrative activities as assigned.
Upon completion of probationary period, may assist to coordinate, instruct, or supervise the work of new recruits or other department personnel, as assigned.

TOOLS AND EQUIPMENT USED:
Emergency medical aid equipment, extrication equipment, fire apparatus, fire pumps, hoses, and other standard firefighting equipment, ladders, radio, pager, personal computer, phone.

The employee must frequently lift and/or move up to 10 pounds and occasionally lift and/or move up to 100 pounds, and occasionally drag up to 200 pounds or more.
The employee must meet initial medical requirements as outlined in NMAC Reg. 18.104.22.168 C (4), and maintain annual medical requirements outlined in NMAC Reg. 22.214.171.124 C (5) and (6).

While performing the duties of this job, the employee regularly works in outside weather conditions. The employee occasionally works near moving mechanical parts, in high precarious places and is occasionally exposed to wet and/or humid conditions, heated environment, cold environment, fumes or airborne particles, toxic or caustic chemicals, risk of electrical shock, and vibration.
The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate, except during certain firefighting or EMT activities when noise levels may be loud.
QUALIFICATIONS FOR ENTRY LEVEL FIREFIGHTER Pay Grade FD7-0
This position is subject to the City of Farmington's Drug and Alcohol Testing Policy which includes, pre-employment testing, post-accident testing, random testing, reasonable suspicion testing, return to duty testing, and follow-up testing.
All candidates must:
Be 18 years or older at the time of employment.
Possess a valid driver's license with acceptable driving record for the past three years. Must be able to obtain a driver's license applicable to Fire Department apparatus.
Must pass annual physical assessment per NWCG guidelines.
Be able to read and write the English language.
Have a working knowledge of driver safety.
Have the ability to complete the Farmington Fire Department recruit academy which will include local customs and jurisdictional practices including of firefighter I and firefighter II information and skills. Also will receive instruction through the live fire evolutions included in the fire lab portion of the recruit training academy. The candidate must successfully complete the academy prior to assignment on shift.
Have the ability to perform strenuous or peak physical effort during emergencies, trainings or station maintenance activities for prolonged periods of time under conditions of extreme heights, intense heat, cold or smoke.
Have the ability to act effectively during emergencies and stressful situations.
Have the ability to follow verbal and written instructions.
Have the ability to communicate effectively orally and in writing.
Have the ability to establish effective working relationships with employees, other agencies and the general public.
Have the ability to obtain New Mexico Emergency Medical Technician-Basic (EMT-B) certification within the first year of employment.
QUALIFICATIONS FOR LATERAL FIREFIGHTER Pay Grade FD7-1
Meet all the hiring for requirements as listed for Entry Level Firefighter Pay Grade FD7-0 and the below criteria to qualify for Pay Grade FD7-1:
Have a valid High School Diploma or GED equivalent. Preference points will be awarded to candidates based on formal education (0.5 point for an Associate's Degree, 1 point for a Bachelor's Degree, and 1.5 points for a Master's Degree or higher; based on a 100 point grading scale).
Military preference point will be awarded to candidates based on submission of a qualifying DD214 (1 point, based on a 100 point grading scale).
Preference points will be awarded to candidates based on current EMT licensure (1 point, based on a 100 point grading scale).
